North Coast Growers — Maximizing Genetic Potential
If you’ve been around the Washington cannabis scene for any length of time, you’re familiar with North Coast Growers. And if you’re new to the scene, this producer/processor from Anacortes is someone you must pay attention to. Known statewide for their award-winning flower, expert breeding, and eye-catching custom labeling, NCG has put itself on the cannabis map, and in the process become a local hero and example of forward thinking.
Now, more than ever, they’re pushing to advance the industry both with education of the public, and through their own cultivation practices. Co-owner, Matt Sampson explains, “We’re really moving in the direction of terpene and cannabinoid profiles. Rather than focus on sativa and indica, and numbers and percentages — which don't really tell the customer anything meaningful — we want to help the industry move forward and give people an educational, repeatable experience.”
It’s true that the best selling (and rarest) growers are those that can achieve unwavering consistency and reliability in their products. And when that consistency is consistently good, well then you have someone like NCG. But how do they achieve that consistency?
The obvious answer would be that they are simply phenomenal at what they do, and that they have their system dialed in. In fact, you can read about their facility and process, in our post: Photo Tour: North Coast Growers.
But when it comes to gardening — especially in this highly competitive industry — you need more than a great facility and a dialed in process to achieve consistency. You need your team dialed in too. Not only does NCG treat its people well and keep them happy, but as Matt says, “We’ve had zero turnover in our flower team since before 502 [Washington’s recreational marijuana initiative, I-502].” That’s over five years and almost unheard of in this market.
This ability to produce quality and consistency, while constantly on the hunt for new phenotypes has won NCG multiple awards and nominations for their flower, including Best Nose (Fruity Pebbles), Best Hybrid (Gorilla Glue #4), and three Runners Up at the DOPE Cup 2017 Awards, and seven winners at Terpestival 2017, just to name a few recent examples.
And while the accolades feel good, for Matt and his team it’s all about focusing on their flower and elevating the industry and cannabis culture as a whole. “We’re maturing away from the THC craze and maximizing the genetic potential of our cultivars,” he says. “This way we can find the genetic profiles that impact people in a special way.”
